Ask a Witch: Should I Cast a Love Spell?

A real witch answers: Should you cast a love spell?

Dear Bunny,

I don’t know what to do. I’m head over heels in love with someone in my class, but they don’t even know I exist. I am desperate for them, and recently I have been wondering if I should place a love spell on them. I worry, though. Is that an okay thing to do? What about free will? Please help me, I am so in love, and I feel like I would do anything to make them mine.

Signed,

Hopelessly Devoted

Dear Hopelessly Devoted,

This is a very deep question that, like many elements of witchcraft, does not have a black and white answer. I could just give you my own personal opinion and send you on your way. Instead, I invite you to conduct your own ethical analysis and draw your own conclusions.

First things first: what do the ethics of witchcraft look like to you? Perhaps you believe in the threefold law or some similar karmic tenet. It could be that you don’t believe in anything of the sort, instead using your own desires as your guiding compass. There are no right or wrong answers here, but it is important that you understand this about yourself and your practice. Take some time to journal your thoughts before moving forward with any actions.

However, since you reached out to me about this issue, I am going to assume that you’re having some trepidation. If you are worried about the repercussions of performing a love spell, then I would suggest first exploring all alternative options. You mention that this person doesn’t know who you are–maybe you could cast a confidence spell to give you the nerve to introduce yourself! If you’re wanting to increase the likelihood of crossing paths, you could carry around a talisman charmed with good luck.

And finally, if you’ve set your heart on doing a love spell (I get it–they are often aesthetically pleasing!) then first consider putting it on yourself. In my own personal practice, self-love spells are some of my favorite magic to perform. These spells are extraordinarily helpful in making you feel beautiful, secure, and self-assured. It could be just the boost you need to get things moving.

For this and all of your future romantic endeavors, I wish you the best of luck. Go forward and spread the love!
